Protein packed Bulletproof Coffee

Back in early September I decided I was going to try Bulletproof coffee after reading about it's benefits. I'll be honest, the thought of using butter in my coffee seemed pretty crazy but when I tried it I was blown away – it tasted fantastic and I was energized all morning long.

At first I started with 1 tablespoon of refined coconut oil with 1 tablespoon of Kerry Gold Unsalted butter (which I get at our local Wal-Mart or Market Basket and costs about $2.99 for a half pound), 1 tablespoon of Splenda and about 2 cups of black coffee (brewed in a French press).

When I ran out of the refined coconut oil I decided to try refined (also labelled as virgin or extra-virgin) coconut oil after discovering that the true benefits of using coconut oil comes from the fact that it provides Medium-Chain-Triglyceride's (or MCTs). I'm not going to explain why these are good for you, check Google for the benefits of coconut oil (or MCT oil). What I will say is that refined coconut oil is devoid of the healthy MCT's so you want a non-refined version. The problem (for me) is that non-refined coconut oil imbues coconut flavoring, so much so that it kind of turned me off from the whole Bulletproof coffee thing. I kept with it for awhile, experimenting a bit, discovered that if I added 1 teaspoon of cinnamon to my mix it helped overpower the coconut flavoring.

So next I decided I was going to try a true MCT oil to get away from the coconut flavoring. I opted to go with this product. I was eager to try this when it arrived and I'll say this, it was so much better then coconut oil.

So I'd been considering adding protein powder to my coffee for awhile and just hadn't taken the plunge, then a couple of weeks ago Jim Stoppani retweeted this:

It was this that made me decide it was time to add some protein powder to my Bulletproof coffee. I've tried this with Optimum Nutrition's Gold Standard Double Rich Chocolate Whey but prefer the blend available in ProJym Chocolate Cookie Crunch.

Get to it, what is the recipe?

So without further ado, here is my current ProJym Bulletproof Coffee (follow preperation steps found here) recipe:

Ok, but what benefits have you experienced?

So back in late June I decided to make a life change and recaped things in early September, which coincides with when I started using Bulletproof coffee. Since making this switch I've continued to shed pounds, currently hovering pretty consistently around 188 pounds, having seen numbers as low as 186 pounds (only 6 pounds from my goal). I'm not sure if it's all because of the MCT oil or not but I'll take it regardless. The fact that I can have my morning coffee and not feel hungry till it's time for lunch is a major benefit.
